Protect your CD/DVD Media for the long haul

CD and DVD disks are inexpensive and convenient.  Most media manufacturers promise long archival lives and most of us rely on CD/DVD media for some form of backup.  Here are a few tips to help ensure that the information is still on the disk when you need it:
  1. Handle the disks by the outer edge only
This prevents fingerprints and smears on the surface. Do not touch the recording side and do not place your disks face down on a hard surface. Do not bend the disks.

  2. Do not write on your disks until they are recorded and finalized
Use only approved marking pens and devices when labeling. Never use ballpoint or hardpoint writing instruments as they might damage the disks.

  3. Clean your disks
Use a soft, lint-free, cloth to remove spots, dust, or fingerprints. Always wipe from the center to the outside edge and never wipe in a circular motion. Do not use abrasive or solvent cleaners and do not use conventional vinyl record cleaning solution. Chemical-based cleaners can damage your disks.

  4. Do not leave your CD/DVD media in direct sunlight or in a hot and humid environment
These conditions can warp and damage your disks.

  5. Always store your disks in protective cases
Cases will protect your CD/DVD Media and data from scratches and damage to the disk surface.
